The Austrian National Library presents more than 500,000 historical images in its image portal Bildarchiv Austria, which is now available to my-picturemaxx users.

The turbulent history of Austria and Europe is reflected in the historical image holdings of the Austrian National Library. As the central academic library of the Republic of Austria, the Austrian National Library looks back to a history rich in tradition going as far as the 14th century. It is a living bridge between the rich heritage of the past and the future-oriented demands of a modern information society.

The origins of the collection go back to the Imperial Court Library and to the former family library of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, which was annexed to the Austrian National Library in 1921. The impressive collection of prints, books and photographic documents dating back to the early days of photography was supplemented in the 20th century by the systematic collection of documentary and press photography on contemporary Austrian history and comprises over three million pictorial objects.

Selected from a stock of more than three million image objects of the most diverse historical media genres, the Bildarchiv Austria image portal presents a broadly diversified range of focal points and topics from the holdings of the Austrian National Library.
