Your Own Website – A Stage for Your Images
4 minutes
Because first impressions count.
Whether we're meeting someone new, seeing a product on the shelf for the first time, or looking into a new company. Those first seconds and minutes often decide whether we want to keep talking to that person, whether the product ends up in our basket during a stressful after-work shop, or whether we take a closer look at that new company.
When we want to learn more about a company, we usually start by visiting its website, expecting to quickly find what we’re looking for and, ideally, to be visually drawn in. In the photography industry in particular, that first visual impression is crucial—it determines whether visitors will stay on the site longer, browse through the media offerings, and ultimately become customers.
We’d like to offer a few tips and ideas on how to design the perfect website.
What should I keep in mind before I create a new website?
First and foremost, a website should reflect the company, agency, institution, or individual it represents. And, of course, it must be tailored to the target audience and the goals you want to achieve.
A consistent layout and the chosen language—which should also align with the rest of the corporate design—are integral components.
Therefore, before creating a new website, consider the following points or discuss them with your team:
- What are the main colors I want to use?
- Which logo do I want to use, and should I have different versions for different purposes? (e.g., favicon for the tab bar)
- Do I want to use specific header images, and does the visual style align with me and my business?
- What should my navigation and footer look like?
- How do I address my visitors?
A useful tip: Just brainstorm freely and jot down your ideas. Sometimes quick sketches—whether on paper or digitally—can help you get a better overall picture.
Once these basic conditions are in place, it's time to bring the website to life.
The Entrance Gate, the Home Page
The homepage is the most important page on your website. This is where visitors land first, and this is where you make your first impression. That’s why you should carefully consider what content and information are most important here and how you can pique customers’ curiosity to explore further.
In the photography industry, you should therefore showcase highlight images or current offers right on the homepage so that visitors are immediately interested and can quickly find their way to the shop or content portal to browse further and, hopefully, discover even more.
So feel free to go all out on the homepage. The most important thing, however, is that everyone can find their way around quickly and that the other subpages are also well-structured and easy to navigate.
Which type of website is the best fit for me?
Every industry, every agency, every organization, and every team is different and has its own priorities, so every outward-facing presentation is unique. It’s important that you can identify with your website.
